Great fishing, great customer service
Dear Editor,
Amongst all the gloom and doom of A22 toll charges and downturn in business in the Algarve, I have some good news to report!
I had the good fortune of reading in your publication, while visiting over the Christmas holiday, about the new Hideaway Fishing complex recently opened.
As frequent visitors (most months) and keen fishermen, we were delighted to find somewhere in the Algarve where we could wet a line and hopefully trick a fish or two into biting.
Tired of driving 150 plus kilometres to find lakes with a decent head of fish and sick of litter strewn banksides, this was such a pleasant change!
This new fishery, brain wave of the proprietor John Campbell, is a little piece of heaven for coarse fishermen like us; not only is it immaculately clean but also landscaped to a very high standard with level and safe timber stages to fish from.
We have visited several times now and have caught fish every time even following car scraping frosts.
John the owner even pre baited swims for us the day before we arrived giving us optimum chances of catching, he visited twice during the day to enquire how we were doing and offered lots of helpful advice. I don’t think the chap could have possibly have done any more to ensure we all had a great time, fantastic customer service indeed plus cold drinks are available during the day.
We were also fortunate enough to see his latest arrival of carp (about 1,000 fish) to boost his stock levels during one day. Some of the new fish were double figures in weight and in immaculate condition.
We can’t wait until the water warms up and the fish really start biting; think our arms will be aching then!

Fishing lakes
Dear Editor,
To get away from all the letters about the tolls on the A22, bad driving and other depressing topics, I would like to say that there are enjoyable and pleasurable things to take part in and talk about here in the glorious Algarve!
Thanks to your article about Hideaway Lakes – run by John Campbell (Algarve Resident, December 17 issue) – I had a pleasurable day fishing on a lake surrounded by wonderful scenery with birds, mongoose, ducks etc. and only a stone’s throw from the A22.
The lake holds Carp and Bass and John Campbell, the owner, gave me lots of information of where to fish and an insight into the migration of the birds, ducks etc. and what an amazing gem this “hideaway” is – within reach for enthusiastic fishermen and nature lovers.
It was good also to share fishing experiences with the other anglers who, like me, were having a fabulous day out.

New fishing retreat in the foothills near Monchique
A new 250 acre private estate is offering lakeside fishing and camping in the foothills near Monchique.
John Campbell, who was formerly a game keeper with experience of estates in Scotland, Wales and England, is looking to develop a slice of an ‘old British country estate’ here in the Algarve.
The estate, near Rasmalho, has been developed from old existing dams and lakes that have been there for approximately 30 years.
There are four lakes of varying size, from three acres up to nine acres, stocked with fish and with a landscaped drive round each perimeter.
Each lake has space for individual camping spots and fishing stands, which will be lined with wood to create a dry, protected foundation.
The lakes currently hold carp in excess of 12kg and large-mouth bass of up to 2.2kg. There are also plans to experiment with other types of fish suited to the climate.
Up at the highest point of the property, a lodge house has been adapted and renovated to accommodate up to 10 guests.
Private venue
John Campbell has been developing the fishing lakes for three years, undertaking the excavations himself and with help from a team of local builders and landscapers.
His aim is to provide the Algarve’s first private sport fishing venue to rival equivalent spots in France and Spain.
Unlike local barragens (reservoirs) in the Algarve, which are often fished for food, Hideaway Lakes will be used for sport fishing only on a catch-and-release agreement and stocked predominantly with carp.
Specimen carp and large-mouth bass are currently in decline in Portugal and the site is expected to provide important conservation as well as leisure activity.
It is John’s intention to attract UK sport fishers who can enjoy the scenery all year round because of the agreeable climate in the Algarve.
The area is already a popular location year round for walkers and cyclists.
Sport fishers are welcome to visit and there are plans to create a family area as well with child-friendly facilities. A small outdoor snack bar will also be built to serve food throughout the day.
John is already accepting guests, who can stay for long or short periods and ‘day passes’ will also be available. Day passes cost €20 per person and there will also be gift vouchers available for a unique Christmas present.
